Roberts belongs to four generations of the Robertses that live in the Atlanta area beginning with her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. Early on, her father became interested in theater. As in school at Emory University in 1952 he acted in productions on campus as well as in other parts of Atlanta. When he was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi, he received his induction into the airforce in 1953. Betty Lou Bredemus was also in the production. Eric Anthony was their first born. They got married in 1957. In 1957 the couple left the military and Walter began his studies in Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter was employed to work for Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio to assist on the stage of the show Bum Bum and His Buddies. The show was filmed in Decatur Georgia. Walter and Betty Lou financed their own production of a local children's Sunday matinee show called Bum Bum and His Buddies. The Actors and Writers Workshop was created in the year 1964 and ran for 6 years. They also had Lelisa Billingsley (also known as Lisa) as well as Julia (also also known as Julie) at the time.
